Peter Smyth - Super Sprinter!

Thursday, August 11, 2011
Carn Wheelers held their last road race of the season this evening under what can only be described as nasty weather conditions.  With the light and weather against them,  a decision was made to make the race two laps of the Curran course instead of three in the interests of safety.

With each lap covering 10 miles and the racers setting off in two groups with the 'scratch men' getting a minute handicap the racing was frantic and aggresive from the whistle and at the start of the last lap when the bell was rung the leading group had held most of the minute they had in hand.

At the chequered flag the scratch group had lost a couple of riders and with the leading group working well together they had made no real impact on the gap, leaving the winners spot to be decided by the bunch sprint which was won by Carn Wheeler Mickey Kelly with Ballymena Road Club rider Peter Smyth in second place and the hard charging Hugh Evans taking a well deserved third place.
