Millar wins McQuigg Cup

Last Wednesday night’s race in the Northstone sponsored club race series was the Sam McQuigg cup 50 miles time trial on the Woodgreen, Dunsilly, Ballee course.
 
Ryan Currie recorded a personal best time of 1 hour 54 minutes 22 seconds to win the event on fastest time and stake a claim for overall honours in the Ballymena Road Club – Chain Reaction Cycles – time trial best all-rounder series. Ryan’s previous best was set in 2011 when he recorded 1.54.24. Tommy Wilson finished second with 1.59.44 with Nigel Kernohan third 2.02.50. Other results were: (4) Martin Ruddy 2.07.25 (5) Jason Burns 2.12.33 (6) Jim Burns 2.13.36 (7) David Kennedy 2.13.59 (8) John Maxwell 2.18.25 (9) Bobby Currie 2.22.51 (10) Beresford Millar 2.34.12.

(1) John Madden (Curran) 1.45.19 (2) Jim McConnell (East Antrim) 1.55.00. John Madden is claiming a new Irish veterans' 50 miles record with his performance on Wednesday night. This has to be ratified by Cycling Ireland. Madden came with a record attempt in mind and had a commissaire attending the event, we await the outcome of his claim.
 
Handicap.
 Beresford Millar beat his 2012 time by over 17 minutes and as a result he won the handicap section and with it the McQuigg trophy. The handicap result reads: (1) Beresford Millar 1.42.47 (2) John Maxwell 1.49.03 (3) Nigel Kernohan 1.55.24 (4) Bobby Currie 1.55.34 (5) Ryan Currie 1.57.39 (6) Jason Burns 1.58.35
 
Wednesday’s race marked the half-way point in the 2013 time trial handicap league series. As usual it is a very closely contested league and the current leader is John Maxwell with nine points. Michael Carroll is second on eight. John Shaw, Stephen Smyth, Eileen Burns, Leo McCavana, Bobby Currie and Beresford Millar are all equal third with six points each.
 
Youths 4.8 miles time trial.
 
Monday night’s youth event was a 4.8 miles time trial from Broughshane to the Ecos roundabout and back. Breandan McCavana was fastest with 12 minutes 33 seconds with Hayden Ritchie second with 14.22 and Matthew Booth third on 15.19. The next youth event is a 9 miles road race at the Craigs circuit on Monday 17th June.
